After deciding to enter the Terrex in early 2010, David Mortlock assembled a disparate crew of racers, all of whom were optimistic enough to think that a 4 day expedition race might be “a good idea”. A few bike sessions later, team ‘Hares and Tortoises’ (formerly Team DKPM) was born….

David Mortlock
David started Adventure Racing four years ago, when his wife told him to get off the sofa and start looking after himself!  Since then, David has competed in numerous races including Ace Races, Open5s, Open Adventure Endurance Series and the 2009 Coast to Coast as a solo. Comfortably bringing up the rear in most of the longer races, David’s primary objective is to finish in one piece and have some fun on the way round.  His secondary objective is to stay in his kayak, as he has a long history of water-based mishaps…

Kate Carter-Walford
After an obligatory work move from Scotland to London forced her to swap the Highlands for Richmond Park and the Virgin Active gym in Twickenham at the end of 2009, Kate was looking for 'something significant' to motivate her training when she saw David’s post on Sleepmonsters. A day out mountain biking in the Peak demonstrated that Kate met the team’s lofty entry requirements, having two arms and two legs! No particular adventure racing experience to boast, just one Open5+ and one Questar in 2010, Kate has spent the last couple of years bagging Munros and mountain biking around Scotland. She’s hoping to finish, and have lots of fun with some great people along the way.

Maria Dixon
Maria started running in 2006 in an attempt to get fit for her main activity, mountaineering. Once bitten by the fell-running bug she entered her first adventure race, and has since become a regular at Open Adventure events. Usually hovering towards the back of the field, Maria has fluked a few good results, including 2nd female pair in the 2009 Open24. Not much of a biker, Maria only bought a ‘proper’ mountain bike in 2009 - she can be identified by her white knuckles and grimace on all but the gentlest descents (in stark contrast to her reckless abandon descending on foot)! Her objective is to have fun, see new places, and finish in one piece.

Paul Curwen
An exiled Cumbrian and Carlisle United supporter now living near Leeds, Paul enjoys training on the basis that it justifies his ‘significant’ weekly intake of lasagne. Paul has competed in a variety of races, including half-marathons, marathons, triathlons, and a few Open5s. He also likes to get stuck into informal challenges, and has run the Cumbrian Way and Yorkshire Three Peaks and cycled the Coast to Coast. The Terrex is likely to prove a significant test to add to this list, as it will be the longest time he has ever had to go without access to his Betfair account!

The team has an unparalleled pragmatism about their level of ability and are aiming for a solid finish of one of the shorter routes, generously sparing everyone else the indignity of coming last!
