Ian and Judith Hughes
Coming from a triathlon background, Ian and Judith's first Adventure Race was in 2003 - competing in the Mixed Pairs in a 2 day Ace Race in Devon. For the first few years they often raced together in the Mixed Pairs - more often than not in the 2 Day Ace Races, which is where they first met David and Ruth (as well as James and Lisa Thurlow!). More recently they have raced in the solo category and, with friends, taken part in the male and female pairs in many of Open Adventure's events - both Open 5's and the Endurance Series, where Ian is a 'veteran' and Judith took part in the series for the first time this year. Last year they also took part in the Coast to Coast - Ian as a solo and Judith in the only team of three females.
Ian has also ventured into race planning and has been the planner at the last two Open 5 Peak District events as well as planning the next Peak District Open 5 in Bakewell.
The Terrex is the first expedition length event they have taken part in and they are looking forward to the challenges and experiences this event will undoubtedly provide!
David and Ruth Johnson
David and Ruth began competing in adventure races in 2001 starting out in a 2 day ACE race when they were second to last hobbling (literally) over the line just in front of a visiting team from Spain herded in by the marshalls. Since then they have competed in numerous ACE race series even finishing in second place (behind Ian and Judith) in the mixed pairs in the series in 2006 and then Open Adventure races completing all the Open24s to date and the Coast to Coast last year. Although Ruth's performance improved significantly after fairly dramatic weight loss in 2009 (enough to win the "Most Improved Adventure Racer" award at the AR ball) they are usually mid table, solid, dependable all rounders who will aim to keep going no matter what.
David has also ventured into race planning having planned two Open5's and this year's Open12.
They have joined together with friends (and former rivals!) Ian and Judith to fulfill a long held ambition to compete in a multi-day expedition race and are looking forward to crossing the finish line with their friends and their reputation as happy smiling racers intact!
