York Mountaineering Club formed their TERREX team in March of this year. Wayne Elliott and Deborah Goodall have been racing together since November 2008; they met Ben Joynson whilst competing in the Open Adventure Coast to Coast in August 2009 where he was racing as a soloist. Paul Scott joined the happy trio after being persuaded to take part in an Open 5 in February 2010.

Team captain Wayne Elliott, 33,  is a freelance outdoors instructor, amongst other things, and his skills have proved invaluable in bringing the team together and for providing coaching on ropework, kayaking and mountain skills. Wayne is an exceptional mountain biker and this year won the Solo Singlespeed category at Mountain Mayhem. He has been Adventure Racing since 2008 concentrating mainly on the Open 5 series, racing with Deborah or as a soloist. Wayne will keep the team focussed, motivated and calm.

Ben Joynson, 31, is an experienced Adventure Racer – starting racing in 2008 and seemingly not missing an event since. He took on the Coast to Coast Adventure Race last summer as a solo male and finished 14th despite sustaining an injury on the final day which left him pedalling with only one leg for the majority of the final stage. Ben is an experienced runner, kayaker and climber. He is highly motivated and very competitive. He finished 6th in the Open Adventure Endurance Series in the Male Pairs category.

Paul Scott, 38, is an Adventure Racing novice with only one race under his belt – the Sedbergh Open 5 in 2010. He is no stranger to adventure though – or endurance sports. A keen mountain biker, Paul has competed in the infamous Mega Avalanche twice, took on Luxemburg Marathon earlier this year, and the Adidas Thunder Run at the start of August - finishing 4th in the mixed pairs category. Paul loves playing outdoors and sees the Terrex as an opportunity to push himself and his team-mates. He’ll be the one cracking jokes when it all starts to get tough!

Deborah Goodall, 35, started Adventure Racing in November 2008 and raced the 2009/10 Open 5 series as a soloist finishing 4th in the series. Deborah is an enthusiastic mountain biker and has been working hard at her running in preparation for this event, taking on the Wharfedale Off Road Half Marathon with support from Wayne and Paul. She’ll be the one spotting opportunities for food stops as the team progresses through the event.

Team York Mountaineering Club has been fortunate to be sponsored by a number of local businesses, without which the team wouldn’t be able to take part. Thanks go to: Black Sheep Brewery,  Biskit Marketing and Print Academy for their assistance with the entry fee; and to Big Bear Bikes and Trailblazer Outdoor (both in Pickering) for their on-going support.
